The word entertainment has a wide range of uses, from the simple pleasure of solving the daily crossword to the spectacle of the Oscar awards. It is sometimes abbreviated to entmt. on fliers and in industry news publications when space is limited, but it is not used this way in general prose. Entertainments often come in the form of a story, such as the famous tale of Scheherazade, from the professional storytelling tradition of Persian professional women. The story has inspired orchestral music from Rimsky-Korsakov, Ravel and Szymanowski; a film by Pasolini; and innovative video games. Moreover, entertainment can be on any scale: from private pleasure to banquets; and performances intended for thousands of people.
