The Importance of Healthy Relationships

However, most relationships can be broken down into four categories: family relationships, friendships, acquaintanceships, and romantic relationships.
In a healthy relationship, both partners treat each other with respect, kindness, and empathy. They listen to each other and take time out of their busy schedules to talk about problems. They make their partner feel important and loved. They also spend time together doing things that they both enjoy, such as going out on dates, spending vacations, or making sure to have quality alone time each day.
Some psychologists believe that humans are wired to form relationships because it helps them survive and thrive. They think that the need to form stable, loving relationships begins in infancy when we bond with a caregiver who meets our basic needs for food, care, warmth, protection, and social contact. These early relationships set the stage for how we approach relationships in adulthood. In other words, if you grew up in an unhealthy, dysfunctional family, it’s likely that you’ll struggle with relationships throughout your life.
