What is a Hobby?
Hobbies give people something to focus on outside of their work and home lives. They help reduce boredom and improve mental health. They also help build new skills. Often when a person spends a lot of time on a hobby they get better at it. Hobbies are a great way to socialise with others who enjoy the same thing as you. For example, if you love to paint then why not join a painting group or meet up with other art lovers to talk about it? Hobbies can also be a great way for children to have fun and enrich their lives with a new activity. They can become really good at their hobbies and it gives them something to be proud of.
Hobbies are special activities that people do in their spare time to relax and have fun. They are different from work and may be done for enjoyment, not monetary gain. People can find hobbies in a wide range of areas from creative, like arts and crafts or writing to more practical interests such as gardening, cooking or collecting. Some hobbies are solitary, such as stamp or cigarette card collecting, while others are more community-based, such as choral singing and volunteering.
The word “hobby” originated in the 13th century and referred to a small horse or pony, called a hobbyhorse. It later evolved into a name for a child’s toy hobby horse and then into the modern meaning of favorite pastime. People who devote a lot of time to their hobbies can develop a great deal of expertise in the area, which is why they are known as amateurs or hobbyists.
